On August the 16th, original Queen of Reinvention and all-round style icon Madonna celebrated her 60th birthday. The age-defying style chameleon has managed to stay relevant by regularly changing and updating her look, and has not shied away from experimenting with some daring and different hairstyles. Let’s discuss some of her best:
The 1984 hit Material Girl saw the relatively new pop star rock some short, ash-blonde waves, which arguably became her most iconic look and is still synonymous with the singer today. By 1986, Madonna was sporting a platinum bleached crop for her Papa Don’t Preach video, a cutting edge yet divisive look for its time. Then there were the long brunette curls of the infamously risqué Like A Prayer video of 1989, followed by a brave jet black pixie crop from 1992’s Rain music video. Long, honey-toned waves from 1998’s Ray of Light album release followed, and we must mention the cascading tousled blonde curls of 2012, arguably the look most suited to the effervescent singer.
Phew! It’s a lot to keep up with. But they do say that if you’re looking to reinvent yourself, your hair is a good place to start, as Madonna herself is testament to. Of course, an extreme reinvention isn’t for everyone and we don’t all have an inner material girl to channel. Changes don’t have to be big to be effective.
